This is an emergency evacuation route, and must be kept clear! Wasp spectator area 1 is the only non-captive spectating area on the rally, and is the best option for Saturday viewing for those that might not want an all-day commitment. Spectator 1 is at the intersection of Round Mountain Rd and FSR 96 at GPS coordinate 35.83319, -82.95052. The preferred access point is from the northwest on Round Mountain Rd. To get here, follow highway 25 from Newport toward Del Rio. Turn right at SR 107 in Del Rio and continue until you arrive at the parking area on Round Mountain Rd. Wasp spectator area 2 is hike-to only, and accessed via Walnut Mountain Trail connecting Round Mountain Campground and Rattlesnake Gap. THERE IS NO PARKING AT RATTLE SNAKE GAP. This spectator point is HIKE TO ONLY. There is NO PARKING on FSR 96 (Wolf Creek South). Vehicles parked in non-designated areas may be towed and will cause rally delays or potentially cancelled stages. Always listen to the safety marshal at the spectator location. Only go where the marshal allows. If you leave the safe location, you could cause delays in the rally or even for the stage to be cancelled. From the viewing area on the bridge, you’ll see the cars take a fast left hander down the hill and onto tarmac. It’s a beautiful place to spend the day as well with Brush Creek rushing under your feet and the French Broad river off to the left. The 1 mile hike from the parking area to one of the three walk-to spectator areas near Allan Branch Pond will be well worth the effort. Viewing here will be exhilarating since this is the fastest section of the whole rally! The preferred access point is from the south off of Highway 25. From Newport, take Highway 25 until the left turn onto Weaver Bend Rd. The road at this point will close by 9:00 am. If you arrive late and are directed to not proceed onto the road, you will still be able to turn around and go to the Wasp spectator location. There is no spectator parking at Allan Branch Pond. Always listen to the safety marshal at the spectator location. Only go where the marshal allows. If you leave the safe location, you could cause delays in the rally or even for the stage to be cancelled. After parking and walking ~0.1 miles up Round Mountain Rd to the Round Mountain Campground, you’ll be treated to a great viewing area and campground amenities like restrooms, tables, and grills. If you’re coming here, plan to be parked on Boomer Den Rd by 9:00 am! The preferred access point is from the northwest on Round Mountain Rd. To get here, follow highway 25 from Newport toward Del Rio. Turn right at SR 107 in Del Rio and continue until you arrive at the parking area on Round Mountain Rd. The road to this point will close at ~ 9:00 am. If you arrive late and are directed to not proceed onto the road, you will still be able to see the cars pass by the marshal point. Just stay there until the stage is clear, and the marshal will allow you to drive to the designated parking location before the next loop. Max Attack Patch spectator area 2 is another great location to catch the action. This area has some limited parking available on FST 96 (Wolf Creek South), but is also only a 0.7 mile hike from the Designated parking area on Boomer Den Rd. We recommend parking early on Boomer Den Rd and hitting both these locations for the two loops of the day! It’s a great way to end a great rally weekend. Always listen to the safety marshal at the spectator location. Only go where the marshal allows. If you leave the safe location, you could cause delays in the rally or even for the stage to be cancelled. A radio operator stationed along the stage route would also act as a “course marshal” (see below), but might be staged somewhere where we are aware communications might be needed. Qualifications: You most posses a valid/current Ham radio operators license, have a working dual-band ham radio that can function on the 440 and 2m bands; preferably a mobile unit (handhelds are acceptable, but not ideal). https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fb5c47ab6fbc7399e0851c4/18c5c6d3-2c87-45bf-9c43-584e7e101f5c/IMG_7271.JPG Volunteer Positions - Heavy Sweep Sweep vehicles/personnel are needed to help competitors who might have encountered a mechanical problem or have left the course. A sweep worker would be stationed at the beginning of each stage and would be dispatched down the stage after it is complete, to assist getting any disabled competitor vehicles back onto the stage road, and move them to somewhere where they crew can come and get them. A sweep worker is not expected to be a mechanic and repair a competitor’s car. While this position doesn’t require a Ham radio license, since this person needs to be able to communicate, rather than pairing them with a Ham radio operator, we typically offer these few positions to those that have a Ham radio license and capable vehicle. Qualifications: Must have a full-frame, 4wd vehicle (generally a capable SUV or truck), recovery tools such as straps, clevis, basic tools, etc. A winch is a plus. The course marshal’s job is to ensure that no unauthorized or local traffic gets onto the stage once it is closed, as this could pose a danger to all involved. In some cases, a course marshal may encounter spectators that show up at an unofficial spectator point, and the marshal can suggest official spectator locations, but then ensure those that remain are kept at a safe distance from the course. This is a great position for those that want to see racing action as cars pass by each minute. But, it could be a lonely position if you are working alone, and don’t encounter any local spectators/residents. At the finish, they may man the finish line to log completion time and complete log sheets. This is a great position to get to see the cars and drivers up close, and get some insight into the scoring/timing of a rally. These workers would provide medical assistance until additional medical support could be provided by ambulances stationed nearby. This is a hard position for us to fill as it requires medical training, please pass the word to anyone you know that might be qualified and willing to help at the rally!
